The history of Kopidlno, the castle and its park

Click for a bigger photoKopidlno and its water redoubt was first mentioned in 1322. The village was promoted to a small town in 1451. The town obtained its emblem in 1523.
The water redoubt was bumt down in 1508. At the beginning of the 16th century the town was bought by Václav Haugvic from Biskupice - he rebuilt the redoubt into a renaissance castle. In 1564 the local fishpond was created (12 hectares). In 1624 Albrecht Eusebius of Wallenstein became the owner of the castle.
The domain came into Schlik's possession in 1638. Especially by courtesy of their building operations the castle gained its present beauty.

The indoor garden (palm greenhouse) became a very notable building (the palm greenhouse in Schonbrun served as the example ).
In 1945 the castle passed down to the state.
